Paver Patios in Downriver Michigan

A paver patio is an outdoor floor built from individual interlocking concrete or stone units set on a compacted aggregate base, so it flexes with frost instead of cracking the way a poured slab does. In the Detroit area a paver patio averages about $3,811 and typically runs between $2,407 and $7,021 according to Angi, while regional installers put Southeast Michigan work closer to $17 to $25 per square foot.

We build paver patios across the Downriver communities from our yard in Taylor. Most of the calls we take fall into one of three situations: a homeowner has a small concrete slab that has heaved and cracked and wants something that will last, a family has a backyard that drains badly and cannot be used after rain, or someone is planning a full outdoor room and the patio is the first surface everything else connects to.

The reason we lead with base preparation rather than paver colors is that base work is what decides whether the patio still looks right in ten years. Pavers themselves are extremely durable. What fails is the material underneath them, and that failure is almost always either not enough compacted aggregate, aggregate that was never compacted properly, or water that had nowhere to go.

Every patio we build starts with a site walk. We look at where water currently runs, how far the yard sits below the door threshold, what the soil is like once we open it up, and how you actually want to use the space. Furniture footprints, grill clearance, and the path from the kitchen door matter as much as the square footage.

How we build a patio, step by step

The sequence below is what a straightforward single-level patio looks like. Multi-level layouts, seat walls, and fire features add steps, but the base work underneath never changes.

  1. Layout and utility locate

    We mark the patio outline on the ground so you can walk it at full size before we commit. Almost every client adjusts something at this stage, and it costs nothing to move a line with marking paint. We then file the MISS DIG 811 locate. Michigan law under Public Act 174 of 2013 requires notice at least three full business days before excavation and no more than 14 calendar days ahead, so this sets the earliest date we can break ground.

  2. Excavation

    We dig out topsoil and any unsuitable material until we reach a subgrade that will hold compaction. How deep that is depends on the base depth the design calls for plus the bedding layer and the paver thickness. Clay is common through the Downriver communities and it holds water, so on clay lots we usually find ourselves going deeper than the minimum before we hit something worth building on.

  3. Subgrade preparation

    The exposed subgrade gets compacted and proof rolled. If we find soft spots, they get excavated further and backfilled with aggregate rather than covered over. Where the soil is fine grained enough to migrate up into the base over time, we lay a geotextile separation fabric first. That fabric does not add strength, it keeps the base and the subgrade from mixing, which is what causes slow settlement years later.

  4. Base construction

    Aggregate goes in and gets compacted in lifts rather than dumped to full depth and rolled once. Industry guidance from the Concrete Masonry and Hardscapes Association puts a pedestrian patio base at roughly 6 to 8 inches of compacted aggregate over a stable subgrade, and more where soils are poor. We build to the depth the site calls for, not to a fixed number.

  5. Grading and drainage

    The base is graded to carry water away from the house and away from any structure it abuts. A patio that is dead level looks appealing on paper and puts standing water against your foundation in practice. Where the yard cannot shed water on its own, we plan for it during this step rather than trying to solve it after the pavers are down.

  6. Bedding and paver setting

    A thin bedding layer is screeded to a consistent depth, and it is a setting bed, not a leveling layer. Pavers go down in the chosen pattern, working off string lines so the coursing stays true across the whole field. Borders and any curved edges are cut with a saw, not snapped, so the joints stay tight.

  7. Edge restraint, jointing, and cleanup

    Edge restraint is spiked along every unsupported edge. Without it the outer courses walk outward season by season and the joints open up. Polymeric sand is swept into the joints, the field is plate compacted, and the sand is activated and cured. We finish by cleaning the surface and hauling everything off site.

What Michigan freeze and thaw changes

Southeast Michigan cycles above and below freezing repeatedly through winter rather than freezing once and staying frozen. Every cycle moves water in the ground, and water expands as it turns to ice. That is what lifts and cracks poured concrete, and it is the single biggest reason we build patios out of individual units instead.

A paver patio handles that movement because it is a flexible system. The units are free to move fractionally against each other and settle back, and the compacted base spreads load rather than resisting it as one rigid piece. When something does need attention years later, individual pavers lift out and reset, which is not an option with a slab.

Practically, freeze and thaw changes three things about how we build here. We compact more thoroughly than a milder climate requires, because poorly compacted aggregate is where water collects. We take drainage seriously at the grading stage rather than treating it as a finishing detail. And we watch the calendar at the end of the season, because polymeric jointing sand needs temperatures and dry conditions to cure properly, and sand that never cured is a joint that fails in spring.

De-icing salt is the other Michigan reality. Rock salt is hard on concrete products over many seasons. We can talk through paver selection and sealing if the patio connects to a route you will be salting all winter.
