Paver Driveways in Downriver Michigan

A paver driveway is a vehicular-rated surface built from individual interlocking units set on a deep compacted aggregate base, so it carries car and truck loads while flexing with frost instead of cracking. Driveways are priced by the square foot and cost more per foot than a patio, because the base is roughly twice as deep and the edge detailing has to resist constant wheel loading.

A driveway is the largest hard surface on most properties and the first thing anyone sees. It is also the surface that takes the most abuse in Michigan: vehicle loads, plow blades, and rock salt, on top of the same freeze and thaw cycling everything else deals with.

Most driveway calls we take come from one of two places. Either an asphalt or concrete driveway has cracked, sunk at the apron, or started breaking up at the edges and patching is no longer worth doing, or someone is building or renovating and wants the driveway to look like part of the house rather than a slab in front of it.

The honest tradeoff is that a paver driveway costs more up front than asphalt and usually more than concrete. What you get in return is a surface that does not crack across its width when the ground moves, that can be repaired in sections rather than replaced, and that adds real curb appeal instead of just providing a place to park.

What a paver driveway project includes

How we build a driveway, step by step

The visible part of a driveway is the last two days of the job. Everything that determines whether it is still flat in fifteen years happens before a single paver comes off the pallet.

  1. Assessment and layout

    We look at how the driveway meets the street, how it meets the garage slab, and where water currently runs across it. We also ask how you use it, because a driveway that has to take two cars plus a trailer needs different geometry than one that never sees more than a single vehicle. The layout gets marked on the ground before we commit to it.

  2. Utility locate and demolition

    The MISS DIG 811 locate is filed with the notice Michigan law requires, at least three full business days ahead and no more than 14 calendar days. Driveways run over service laterals more often than any other surface we build, so this step is not a formality. The existing surface then comes out and gets hauled away.

  3. Excavation to vehicular depth

    We excavate substantially deeper than we would for a patio. Industry guidance puts a vehicular paver base well above the 6 to 8 inches typical of a pedestrian surface, and on the clay soils common through the Downriver communities we plan for the deeper end of that. The subgrade is compacted and proof rolled, and soft spots are dug out and replaced with aggregate rather than bridged over.

  4. Separation fabric and base construction

    Geotextile fabric goes down where the subgrade is fine grained, which keeps clay from migrating up into the aggregate and slowly softening the base. Aggregate is then placed and compacted in lifts. Under a driveway this is the whole ball game. A base that reaches proper density carries the load; one that was dumped to depth and rolled once will show wheel ruts within a few seasons.

  5. Grading, drainage, and transitions

    The base is graded so water sheds off the driveway rather than running toward the garage or pooling at the apron. The two transitions, street to driveway and driveway to garage slab, get particular attention, because those are the points that take the hardest impact from plows and the most concentrated water flow.

  6. Paver setting and borders

    Driveway pavers are set in an interlocking pattern chosen for load transfer as much as looks. Herringbone is the standard for vehicular surfaces because it resists the rotational forces of turning wheels better than a running bond does. A soldier course border frames the field and gives the edge restraint something solid to hold.

  7. Edge restraint, jointing, and compaction

    Edge restraint on a driveway is not optional and it is not the place to save money. Wheel loads push outward constantly, and without properly spiked restraint the outer courses migrate and the joints open. Polymeric sand is swept in, the field is plate compacted with a protective pad, and the sand is activated and cured.

Michigan frost, plows, and road salt

A driveway takes the worst of a Michigan winter. It gets plowed or shovelled, it gets salted, and it sits over ground that freezes and thaws repeatedly rather than staying frozen through the season. Every one of those is a reason to build it as a flexible interlocking system rather than a rigid slab.

Frost heave is the main structural threat, and the defence is a deep, properly compacted, well drained base. Water that cannot collect under the surface cannot freeze and lift it. On clay lots that means paying attention to where the water goes, not just how deep we dig.

Plow damage is a detailing problem more than a material problem. Sharp transitions and proud edges are what catch a blade. We set the surface so the transitions are flush and the border sits tight, and we can talk through where to place markers if the driveway is long or the edges are hard to read under snow.

Rock salt is hard on concrete products over many winters, and the effect shows up as surface scaling rather than sudden failure. Paver selection matters here, and sealing is worth discussing on a driveway specifically because it is the surface most exposed to de-icers. It is also the reason we favour full-depth units over anything with a thin decorative face.

Driveways are priced per square foot of finished surface, and they sit above patio pricing per foot because the base is roughly twice as deep, there is more excavation and haul-away, and the edge and apron detailing takes more labour.

The variables that move the number are the square footage, what is being removed first, how deep we have to go before we reach a subgrade worth building on, whether the approach and apron need reworking, and the paver line you choose. Removing an old concrete driveway costs more to dispose of than removing gravel, and a lot with a steep approach or poor drainage needs work the finished surface will never show.

We give a firm written price after we have seen the property and know what is under the existing surface. Anyone quoting a driveway sight unseen is guessing at the part of the job that carries all the risk.
