We build paver patios in Riverview, Michigan, 9 miles from our yard in Taylor along Pennsylvania Road. Riverview is a small, settled city with mid-century housing and a high proportion of properties with in-ground pools, so a good share of the patio work here is pool surround work, which has its own slip resistance and drainage requirements.
Riverview is compact and established. It does not have the sprawl of the larger Downriver cities or the tight grid of the riverfront ones, and the housing is largely mid-century, well kept, and sitting on lots that have had decades to settle into their planting.
The pattern we see most here is a property where the house and yard are in good shape but the hard surfaces have aged out. Original concrete patios that have cracked and separated, pool decking that has become uneven, and walkways with a lip at the join. The bones are fine, the surfaces are done.

Pool surrounds, and rebuilding surfaces that have aged out
A pool surround is a patio with stricter rules. Texture matters more than it does anywhere else on a property, because people are walking it wet and barefoot, so we steer toward surfaces with real grip rather than the smoothest available finish. If sealing comes up later, the slip question has to be part of that conversation too.
Drainage around a pool has to be deliberate. Water needs to leave the coping and the deck rather than pooling where people sit or running back toward the pool. On a mature Riverview lot with established planting, that often means working with grades that were set decades ago and were never designed for the surface we are now putting down.
Replacing an aged concrete surround also means dealing with what is underneath. Original decking around a pool is frequently sitting on very little compacted material, which is why it has moved. We take it out rather than paving over it, because building a new surface on the thing that already failed just delays the same outcome.
The wider Riverview job is often a phased one. Established properties tend to want the pool deck this year and the front walk next, and because these lots have mature planting worth protecting, staging the work over two seasons is frequently the sensible call rather than a compromise.
Housing stock
Largely mid-century and well maintained, on a compact city footprint. Properties tend to have been in the same hands for a long time and show it in the planting.
Lot sizes
Moderate, with established landscaping that is worth protecting during construction. Access routes need planning around mature beds and trees rather than straight through them.
