The honest comparison between pavers and poured concrete in Michigan is not about which is stronger. It is about what each does when the ground underneath it moves, because in this climate the ground moves every single winter.

A poured slab is one rigid piece. When frost lifts the soil beneath part of it, the slab has to resist that as a single unit, and eventually it cracks. The crack is permanent.

A paver surface is hundreds of individual units sitting on a compacted, flexible base. The same ground movement gets absorbed rather than resisted, and if a section does settle over time, those units lift out and go back down.

That difference is the whole argument. Everything below is the detail behind it.

What a Michigan winter actually does

Southeast Michigan does not freeze once in December and thaw in March. It crosses the freezing point repeatedly through the season, and that repetition is what causes the damage.

Here is the mechanism. Water in the soil freezes and expands as it turns to ice, which lifts whatever sits above it. Then it thaws, the ground settles back, and the surface comes down again, though not always to exactly where it started. Repeat that through a winter, and again the next winter.

Clay makes it worse, and clay is common through the Downriver area. Clay holds water rather than shedding it, so there is more water available to freeze in the first place.

Two things follow from this. First, no outdoor surface here is going to sit on ground that stays still. Second, the correct question is not how to prevent movement but how the surface responds to it.

How concrete fails in this climate

A poured concrete slab is designed to be rigid. That is its strength in compression and its weakness against ground movement.

When frost lifts one part of the slab and not another, the concrete has to bridge that difference. Concrete is strong in compression and comparatively weak in tension, so it fails where it is being pulled apart. That is a crack, and once it exists it is permanent and it will keep opening.

Control joints help by directing where the cracking happens, so you get a straight line at a planned location rather than a random one. They do not stop the cracking. They organize it.

The other common Michigan concrete failure is not cracking but heaving at a joint, where one section lifts relative to its neighbour and leaves a lip. On a walkway that lip is a trip hazard, and under snow it is invisible.

None of this means concrete is badly made. It means a rigid material is being asked to sit on ground that does not stay still.

How pavers behave differently

An interlocking paver surface is a system rather than a slab. The units are individual, the joints between them are filled with sand rather than mortar, and the whole field sits on compacted aggregate.

When the ground moves, three things absorb it. The base spreads the load rather than concentrating it. The sand joints allow fractional movement between units. And the units themselves are small enough that no single one has to bridge a difference in level.

The result is a surface that tolerates the annual cycle instead of accumulating damage from it.

This is also why we spend more of a paver budget below the surface than most homeowners expect. The pavers are extremely durable and rarely the thing that fails. What fails is the base underneath: aggregate that was never compacted to proper density, a base too thin for the use, or water that had nowhere to go. Get the base right and the surface follows.

The cost comparison

Concrete generally wins on the initial number, and we are not going to pretend otherwise.

Blackstone Landscaping puts a concrete brick patio in Southeast Michigan at about $11.34 per square foot, ranging from $8.69 to $22.18.

Great Lakes Landscaping puts Southeast Michigan paver patios at roughly $17 to $25 per square foot, or about $5,000 to $9,000 installed.

Angi reports a Detroit paver patio average of about $3,811, typically ranging from $2,407 to $7,021.

So on day one, concrete costs less per square foot. That is a real advantage and for some projects it is the deciding one.

The difference that shows up in year eight

Imagine both surfaces develop a problem in the same spot after several winters. A section has settled, or a lip has formed, or the surface has cracked.

On the concrete slab, the options are patching, which is visible and does not address the cause, or replacement, which means breaking out and disposing of the whole slab and pouring again. There is no middle path, because the slab is one object.

On the paver surface, the affected units come up by hand and get stacked in order. The base underneath is opened, the actual cause is found and corrected, whether that is a soft subgrade, a thin base, or water finding a path in. Then the base is rebuilt, and the original pavers go back down in their original pattern.

You have repaired a few square feet rather than replaced a patio, and the surface looks continuous afterwards because the same units went back.

That repairability is the strongest practical argument for pavers in this climate. A cracked slab offers no equivalent path, which is why the answer there is almost always replacement.

It also matters where tree roots are involved. On established streets, roots lifting a driveway are a common problem, and being able to lift and reset a section rather than replace the whole surface is a genuine advantage rather than a theoretical one.

Salt and surface damage

De-icing salt is hard on concrete products over many seasons, and this applies to both poured concrete and concrete pavers. The damage shows up as surface scaling, where the top layer flakes away, rather than as sudden failure.

The difference again comes down to what you can do about it. A badly scaled paver is lifted out and swapped for a matching unit. A badly scaled slab is a slab.

Sealing is worth considering on either surface where salt exposure is heavy, and a driveway is the strongest case for it since it takes more de-icer than anything else on the property. The honest point to keep in mind is that sealing is optional, it is a recurring maintenance cycle rather than a one time treatment, and it does not fix a base problem.

When concrete is still the right call

We build with pavers, so treat this section with appropriate scepticism, but there are real situations where concrete is the sensible choice.

When budget is the binding constraint. If the difference between concrete and pavers is the difference between doing the project and not doing it, concrete now beats pavers never.

When a municipality requires it. Trenton, for example, requires driveway approaches in the public right of way to consist of concrete at a minimum of 6 inches in depth, with expansion material between the public sidewalk and the curb. A paver driveway there runs to the property line and transitions into a compliant concrete approach at the street. That is not a preference, it is the rule, and we build to it.

For structural footings. Anything with a real footing under it, such as a roofed structure or a substantial outdoor kitchen, is concrete below grade regardless of what the visible surface is. The Michigan Residential Code requires footings for permanent structures to bear at least 42 inches below finished grade, which is why those elements go deeper here than in milder states.

For small, simple, low stakes areas where a future replacement would not be a significant event.

What we would push back on is using concrete for a large, visible, permanent surface purely because the initial quote is lower, without anyone having explained what happens when it cracks. That is a decision made without the relevant information.
