The best paver for a Michigan winter is a full depth concrete unit that its manufacturer rates for exterior freeze and thaw exposure, in a thickness matched to what will be driving or walking on it.
That is the short answer, and it is worth knowing. But it is also the less important half of the question.
Nearly every paver surface we are called to repair in Southeast Michigan failed because of what was underneath it, not because of the unit on top. The pavers were fine. The base was too thin, or it was never compacted properly, or water had a path in and nowhere out.
So this article covers how to choose a paver for this climate, and then it covers the thing that actually decides whether your surface is still flat in fifteen years.

Why the base matters more than the paver
This is the part most buying guides skip, so we will put it first.
Southeast Michigan crosses the freezing point repeatedly through the winter. Every cycle moves water in the ground, and water expands as it turns to ice. Whatever sits above it moves too.
A paver surface handles that because it is a flexible system, not because the individual units are special. The compacted aggregate base spreads load rather than resisting it as one piece, and the sand joints let units shift fractionally against each other and settle back.
Take away the properly built base and you have removed the mechanism. The best paver on the market, set on four inches of loose stone, will be uneven within a few winters. A mid range paver on a correctly built, well drained base will still be flat long after.
Industry guidance from the Concrete Masonry and Hardscapes Association puts a pedestrian patio base at roughly 6 to 8 inches of compacted aggregate over a stable subgrade, with more where soils are poor. Vehicular surfaces need considerably more than that. And depth alone is not sufficient, because aggregate has to be placed and compacted in lifts to reach proper density.
On the clay soils common through the Downriver area, we also lay geotextile separation fabric. It adds no strength. What it does is stop clay fines migrating up into the aggregate over the years, which is what slowly turns a good base into something that behaves like the soil beneath it.

Full depth versus thin faced units
With that said, the unit does matter, and there is one distinction worth understanding.
A full depth paver is made of the same material all the way through, so the color and texture run through the whole unit. A thin faced product has a decorative surface layer over a plainer body.
In a salted Michigan climate, full depth wins clearly. De-icing salt causes surface scaling on concrete products over many seasons, and on a thin faced unit, scaling removes the part that carries the appearance. On a full depth unit, the same wear exposes more of the same material.
The same logic applies to any surface that gets scraped by a shovel or a plow blade, which in this state is most of them.
Thickness and the application
Thickness follows load, and this is where a lot of well intentioned DIY selection goes wrong.
Pedestrian surfaces such as patios, walkways, and garden paths use thinner units than vehicular surfaces. A driveway carries vehicle weight and, more importantly, the rotational forces of wheels turning while stationary, which is a different kind of stress entirely.
Rather than picking a number yourself, the useful rule is to confirm that the unit is rated by its manufacturer for the application. A paver intended for a patio should not go under a car, regardless of how good it looks.
Pattern matters here too. Herringbone is the standard for driveways because the interlocking geometry resists that rotational force better than a running bond does. On a patio, where the loads are gentle, pattern is much more of an aesthetic choice.

Texture and slip resistance
Texture is a comfort and safety decision more than a durability one, and it matters most in three places.
Around pools, where people walk wet and barefoot. We steer toward surfaces with genuine grip rather than the smoothest available finish.
On steps and entrances, which are the highest consequence place for a slip and the place people use in the dark carrying things.
On any north facing surface that stays damp and grows algae, which in this climate is a real category.
Pavers have an advantage over a smooth troweled slab here regardless of finish, because the joints themselves provide grip underfoot.
Joint sand is part of the system
Joint sand is not a finishing detail, it is structural. It is what transfers load between units and lets the field behave as an interlocking system rather than a collection of loose blocks.
Polymeric sand contains binders that set once activated with water, so it holds together in the joint. Plain sand does not: it washes out in heavy rain, blows out over time, and offers no resistance to weed growth.
Most of the joint failures we are called to on older installs come down to plain sand having gradually disappeared. Once joints open, water gets in faster, and in a freeze and thaw climate more water reaching the base is exactly the problem you were trying to avoid.
One Michigan specific caution: polymeric sand needs temperature and dry conditions to cure. A surface jointed too late in the season can look fine in November and wash out in spring. It is a real reason we watch the calendar on late season work rather than pushing jobs through.
Salt resistance and sealing
Rock salt is the hardest thing most Michigan surfaces face, and it works slowly. The damage is surface scaling rather than sudden failure.
Full depth units handle it better, as covered above. Beyond that, sealing is the main lever, and we want to be straight about what it does and does not do.
Sealing helps with stain resistance, makes cleaning easier, deepens or enriches color depending on the product, and helps stabilize joint sand. On a driveway or a walkway that gets salted every winter, that is a reasonable case.
Sealing does not compensate for a bad base, stop settlement, or prevent frost movement. Anyone telling you a sealer will stop your surface from moving is overselling. Weigh it against the slip resistance question too, and remember that sealing is a recurring maintenance cycle rather than a one time treatment.
One practical note for new installs: it is generally better to let a new surface weather through a season before its first seal, so that efflorescence, the white mineral haze concrete products can push to the surface, has worked its way out rather than being trapped under the finish.
Permeable pavers in this climate
Permeable systems let water pass through the surface into an open graded base rather than running off it. In a climate where standing water is the underlying cause of most surface failures, that is an appealing idea.
They are a design decision rather than a default. A permeable system needs a base built specifically for the purpose, which is not the same construction as a standard base, and it needs periodic maintenance to keep the joints from clogging with fines over time.
Where they earn their place is when drainage is the actual problem being solved, for instance where runoff has nowhere good to go or where a municipality has requirements about managing water on site. We would raise them in that situation rather than presenting them as automatically better.

Blends generally weather more gracefully than single flat colors, because as the surface picks up its patina the variation reads as intentional. On older homes, particularly the pre war housing stock in cities like Wyandotte, smaller formats and more traditional blends usually sit better against older brick than large format contemporary units do.
Look at samples against your actual house, outdoors, in daylight, rather than choosing from a screen or a showroom. The stone looks different against your brick than it does against anything else.
